Meditation

Weaned

Lately I’ve been challenging myself in the notion of insecure clinginess towards God versus calm trust and devotion.

Time and again, in the midst of turmoil, the Christian’s posture in scripture comes back to this collected grounding in who God is, rather than a desperate reaching out. The nuance is important I think.

Here is a quote from a book I am reading in my devotional time:

Christian faith is not neurotic dependency but childlike trust. We do not have a God who forever indulges our whims but a God whom we trust with our destinies. The Christian is not a naive, innocent infant who has no identity apart from a feeling of being comforted and protected and catered to . . . We do not cling to God desperately out of fear and the panic of insecurity; we come to him freely in faith and love. . . God does not want us neurotically dependent on him but willfully trustful in him. And so he weans us.

Jars of Clay

As believers we are like jars of clay containing God’s power, or as Elizabeth Elliot puts it “receptacles of Grace”. Here I filmed myself making a little pot of clay. I don’t have a spinning wheel so my jar has many imperfections, which I think aligns perfectly with the sense of the passage.

The jar of clay is inherently and historically an imperfect artifact. The attention is shifted to what is inside. Likewise, it’s not about us. It’s not about our ability to do great things. It’s about resting in God’s presence and relying on His strength. Only once I understood this and started truly applying it, have I experienced growth and true blessings in my life.

God Is In the Small Things

I’ve been including a little videography in some of my devo time and thought I’d share it.

When things get overwhelming. Remember, God is not looking for your accomplishments and your overworked creations, He is the giver of peace. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

In the past 2 weeks, meditating on this short psalm helped me find creativity and vitality right where I am and to find joy in homemaking that transcends what the world offers. What surprised me is that the inspiration often came outside of the devotional time.

Here is a video I’ve made inspired by these thoughts.
